Loving Husband, Father, Grandfather and Great-Grandfather

Obituary

Mario J. Martirone, 90, of Northfield, passed away peacefully at home on March 31, 2021. He was born in Stratford, NJ in 1930 and was the youngest of four children. He graduated in 1949 from Atlantic City High School and served as a financial administrator for the Atlantic County Health Department for 25 years until his retirement in 1992.

Mario married the love of his life, Angie, in 1955. In 1958, they moved to Northfield where they would raise their three children. He was a life-long member of St. Bernadette's (now St. Gianna Beretta Molla) Catholic Church, and could often be found working at the annual chicken barbeque, cooking for the spaghetti dinner or serving as a church usher. He was a Fourth Degree Knight with the Knight of Columbus and was the past treasurer of the Sons of Italy Antonio Meucci Lodge #2613.

Mario was a passionate Philadelphia Eagles and Phillies fan. He was an avid gardener and enjoyed growing his own vegetables—especially tomatoes. He loved refinishing antique furniture, and was the family's resident painter and expert cleaner. Mario was a competitive bocce player who won his league championship title many times over. He was a beloved friend and enjoyed meeting up with "the guys" at Romanelli's for breakfast every Thursday morning after mass.

Above all else, the most important thing in Mario's life was his family. For over 65 years, he and Angie did everything together: traveled, enjoyed going on cruises and watched sports. When his children were younger, he coached their sports teams, took his boys on father-son camping trips with the Boy Scouts and supported his daughter's band competitions. Later in life, he was always there to support his four grandchildren. He never missed a school activity, a graduation ceremony, a sporting event, or the many opportunities to help them move from a dorm room or an apartment. He loved family gatherings and was known for his grilled clams and his famous antipasto dish at Christmas. He was the consummate family man whose children, grandchildren and eventually great-grandchildren were his pride and joy.

Mario was preceded in death by his parents Giuseppe and Ida (née: Tini), his brothers Fred and Anthony Martirone and his sister Messina Petruzzi. He is survived by his loving wife Angie (née: DeVito), sons Joseph (Debi) and Michael, and daughter Maria Lamey (Mike); grandchildren Christina Schiavone (Kevin), Michael Martirone, Michael A. Lamey, Jr. (Kiley) and Miranda Lamey; great-grandchildren Lucy, Nora and Timothy Schiavone and Mayley and Michael A. Lamey III; and sisters-in-law Theresa Vergulti and JoAnn Stewart.

Relatives and friends are invited to celebrate Mario's life on Tuesday, April 6. Visitation will be held at Jeffries and Keates from 9:30-10:30am. A Celebration Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Gianna Beretta Molla Catholic Church, 1421 New Road, Northfield, NJ 08225 at 11:00am. Burial to follow at Holy Cross Cemetery and Chapel Mausoleum. Military Honors to be rendered by the Last Salute Military Honor Guard.
